England and Scotland have both made impressive starts to their World Cup campaigns, setting themselves firmly on course for a place in the Round of 32 after morale-boosting victories in their opening group fixtures.
Thomas Tuchel’s England side began their tournament in dominant fashion with a 4–2 victory over Croatia, while Scotland’s Tartan Army earned a historic 1–0 triumph against Haiti in Boston, marking a memorable start for both teams.
With the group stage progressing, fans are already speculating about potential knockout opponents for the two home nations.
As things currently stand, Scotland’s likely Round of 32 opponents would come from the runners-up position in Group F. Based on recent results, that could mean a clash with Japan, who earned a 2–2 draw with the Netherlands.
However, if Scotland were to finish second in Group C, the matchup would shift, placing them against the winners of the corresponding group — at present, that would be Sweden, who top the standings in that section.
England’s route to the knockout stage, though, is more complex. Despite being among the tournament favourites and widely tipped to top their group, the Group L winners would be drawn against the highest-ranked third-placed team emerging from a mini-league between Groups E, H, I, J, and K.
Following the first round of fixtures, Portugal currently occupy that third-place position, which could set up a tantalising rematch of the 2006 quarter-final — a game that featured Cristiano Ronaldo and remains etched in English football memory.
That 2006 encounter in Gelsenkirchen ended in dramatic fashion, with Wayne Rooney receiving a red card for a challenge on Ricardo Carvalho. Ronaldo’s controversial wink following the dismissal of his Manchester United teammate added to the tension before Portugal went on to win the match in a penalty shootout.
While there is still plenty of football to be played in the group stage and positions could change in the coming days, both England and Scotland will be optimistic about their chances of progressing to the World Cup’s last 32 and continuing their promising starts to the tournament.
