The 2026 FIFA World Cup finally witnessed its first major goalkeeping blunder during Mexico’s group stage encounter against Korea Republic on Thursday.

After a goalless and uneventful first half where neither side managed to create any significant chances, the deadlock was broken only due to a defensive lapse.

Korea Republic’s goalkeeper, Kim Seung-gyu, endured a moment to forget when he rushed out to collect a loose ball. In attempting to secure possession, he collided awkwardly with one of his own defenders, demonstrating a clear lack of communication and awareness at the back.

The mishap caused Kim to drop the ball directly into the path of Luis Romo, who calmly slotted it into an empty net to hand Mexico the lead, sending the home supporters into a frenzy.

Adding to the significance of the moment, Romo scored the goal at his own club’s stadium, making the occasion even more special for the midfielder.

As noted by football statistician Mister Chip, Romo became “the first Chivas player to score for Mexico in a World Cup since Chicharito Hernández achieved the feat at the 2010 World Cup, 16 years ago.”

He also joined an exclusive list, being “the ninth player from CD Guadalajara to score for El Tri in the history of the tournament.”

It was a night where fortune favoured Mexico, and Romo’s opportunistic strike ensured the host nation capitalised fully on a rare moment of defensive disarray from their Asian opponents.
