Nowadays, apps like PhonePe are widely used for payments everywhere—from local tea stalls to online shopping platforms. However, a screenshot related to PhonePe is currently going viral on social media, raising concerns among users.
It is being claimed that if you do not use a specific feature of PhonePe, the company will deduct ₹100 from your account every three months as a charge. Let’s understand the details of this matter.
What is the issue regarding the ₹100 deduction?
Many users are sharing a screenshot on social media platforms like X and Reddit. According to posts shared by popular tech tipster Abhishek Yadav and a Reddit user (im_pulsive), the company is warning users that if their PhonePe Wallet remains inactive (unused) for 12 consecutive months, maintenance charges will be levied. Once the 12-month period is over, a charge of ₹100 will be applied every quarter.
What is the PhonePe Wallet?
In India, most people use PhonePe to send money directly from their bank accounts via UPI. However, the app also includes a 'PhonePe Wallet' feature. It functions like a digital purse where you can load money in advance. In reality, many users are unaware that such a wallet even exists within the app, as they typically make payments directly from their bank accounts.
There is a catch in closing the wallet, too
When users learned about this charge, they attempted to close this unwanted wallet. However, reports indicate a complication here as well. Many users state that if they wish to permanently close the wallet, the app requires them to first complete the KYC (Know Your Customer) process.
Why are users expressing dissatisfaction?
This news has come as a surprise to many people. Users are questioning why they should pay for a feature they have never used or do not need. This charge will not affect your regular UPI transactions.
You can continue making payments to anyone just as before. However, experts believe that charging for a feature that goes unused could undermine customer trust.
