New Delhi. At the foundation day program of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) at YB Chavan Center in Mumbai, party president Sharad Pawar on Wednesday expressed disagreement over comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Jawaharlal Nehru. He said that the sacrifice of former Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his contribution in nation building cannot be forgotten.

Speaking at the NCP’s 27th Foundation Day celebrations, Pawar said Modi has become the longest serving Prime Minister ever, and the perception has been created about him that there is no leader like him. He made it clear that Nehru’s contribution to the freedom struggle and nation building cannot be forgotten and should be honoured.
Nehru’s legacy cannot be forgotten
The former Union Minister said that Nehru cannot be compared with any other leader. During the fight for independence led by Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru spent several years in jail. Referring to Modi’s long tenure, Pawar said, ‘This is a positive thing. In a parliamentary democracy, the post of Prime Minister is constitutional, and we should respect it. But Nehru’s legacy cannot be forgotten.

Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan accused Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi of atrocities against Sikhs. Pawar strongly condemned this statement of Mahajan. He said that such statements are not acceptable. Operation Blue Star was the sacrifice of Indira Gandhi. Sikhs have played an important role on the borders for the security and food security of the country. Some people chose a different path, but there are some incidents that cannot be forgotten. Indira Gandhi never compromised with the prestige and security of the country.
Seeing the controversy, Punjab BJP distanced itself from his statement.
Mahajan termed Operation Blue Star as a ‘black day’ and compared the 1984 army action with the attack by Afghan ruler Ahmed Shah Abdali, sparking a political controversy. Opposition parties reacted sharply to Mahajan’s statement and demanded his removal from his post. The BJP leader described Operation Blue Star as a ‘military attack’ on the holy site of the Sikh community and alleged that then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had ordered the army to be sent to Punjab and the holy complex. Congress and AAP have also targeted his statement. Seeing the controversy over Maharashtra Minister’s statement, Punjab BJP has distanced itself from his statement.
