The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become embroiled in a new diplomatic storm after confirmation that Iran’s national football team will be subject to stringent same-day entry and exit regulations for matches held in the United States. Due to ongoing security concerns and geopolitical frictions, the Iranian squad has reportedly been informed that they may only enter the US on the day of their games and must leave immediately after each match.
Severe travel restrictions for Team Melli
In an extraordinary move ahead of the 2026 tournament, Iran’s Team Melli faces a strict travel mandate limiting their stay in the US to just match days, according to reports from The Mirror. The policy dictates that players and officials can only cross into the country on the morning of their scheduled fixtures and must depart directly after the final whistle. This approach has created major logistical complications for the coaching staff and support personnel.
Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, confirmed the situation to journalists, stating: “We can enter in the morning and we must leave the same day.” This unusual arrangement comes in the wake of heightened political tension, forcing the team to abandon its initial plan to establish a training base in Tucson, Arizona, and instead relocate headquarters to Mexico.
Government cites terrorism concerns
The decision follows a series of accusations and warnings from US officials about possible security threats linked to the Iranian delegation. Although the necessary sporting visas have been approved to allow participation in the tournament, the US State Department has justified its heightened restrictions by referencing potential risks during the competition.
A spokesperson for the US State Department confirmed that “the visas necessary for Iran to compete in the World Cup, including for athletes and essential staff, have been issued.” However, the official also levelled a serious allegation, stating: “We will not allow the Iranian team to misuse this system to smuggle terrorists into the United States under false pretenses.”
Mexico provides base of operations
With the US authorities denying permission for overnight stays, Mexico has stepped forward to host Iran’s squad during the group stage. The Iranian Football Federation had earlier appealed to FIFA to relocate their matches entirely to Mexican venues, but the global governing body rejected that request, leading to the current cross-border commute arrangement.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the issue, expressing her government’s readiness to accommodate the players. She stated: “We have no reason to deny them the chance to stay in Mexico. The United States does not want the Iranian team to remain overnight, but they will be playing three matches there. They asked us if they could stay overnight in Mexico, and we said, ‘Yes, no problem.’ We have no problem.”
Gruelling Group G fixtures ahead
The travel limitations add an additional obstacle to Iran’s bid to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in their history. Their World Cup journey begins in Los Angeles against New Zealand, followed by a clash with Belgium six days later in California. The group stage concludes in Seattle with a match against Egypt, requiring multiple cross-border flights under the same-day entry and exit protocol.
