FC Bayern Munich are reportedly facing strong competition from Premier League sides in their efforts to sign Paris Saint-Germain’s young defender Emmanuel Mbemba.
As per a report from the BBC, Arsenal have now joined the race for the 18-year-old talent and have already made an initial approach to the Paris-based club regarding a possible transfer.
Mbemba’s current contract with PSG expires at the end of June, which means he could leave on a free transfer. Although the French champions are keen to renew his deal, the two-time France U19 international is believed to have already made up his mind to move elsewhere this summer.
Bayern Munich are closely monitoring the situation and are particularly interested in the left-footed defender, who is capable of playing both as a left-back and a central defender.
Bayern’s management continues to look for defensive reinforcements at Säbener Straße, especially as Min-Jae Kim and Hiroki Ito could be on their way out during the upcoming transfer window.
Signing Mbemba could serve multiple purposes for Bayern: he would provide strong competition for Alphonso Davies, whose future has also been the subject of speculation, while offering depth to help convince Kim and Ito to stay.
Earlier this year, L’Équipe reported that Bayern Munich were well placed to secure Mbemba’s signature, though Bundesliga rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Ligue 2 side Paris FC are also keeping tabs on the teenager.
Should negotiations with Mbemba fall through, Bayern are still considering Benfica’s Tomás Araújo as an alternative. According to Sky, the Portuguese centre-back remains on the club’s shortlist of defensive targets.
