Pep Guardiola has spoken publicly for the first time since his departure from Manchester City, admitting that he is unsure about what lies ahead for him in football.
The 55-year-old Spanish coach appeared at the inaugural Cruyff Foundation event on Saturday, where he looked back on his decade-long tenure at the Etihad Stadium and discussed his next steps, revealing that he has yet to make any concrete plans for his immediate future.
Guardiola officially confirmed his departure from City earlier this month after ten successful years in charge. Reports have suggested that he may take a one-year sabbatical, with a return to club management considered highly unlikely in the short term.
His final match as City manager came in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, a game that also marked farewells for Bernardo Silva and John Stones.
Reflecting on his time at Manchester City, Guardiola said at the Cruyff Foundation event: “It has been really good, really fun. It was an incredible experience, I could not imagine to be 10 years there.”
While speculation continues about his future, with some suggesting a year-long break from football, Guardiola himself downplayed any immediate plans, saying, “I don’t even know myself.”
There has been talk linking Guardiola with a possible role with the Spain national team, but no official discussions or confirmations have emerged from either side.
Throughout his farewell phase, Guardiola has consistently told both his players and supporters that once the passion and energy for the job begin to fade, it is the right time to step away. His latest remarks align with that sentiment, reflecting a sense of closure and reflection after an intense decade in charge.
Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca is widely expected to be named as Manchester City’s new manager soon. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has reassured fans that the club remains “far from peaked” and is structured to keep winning, regardless of who occupies the manager’s seat.
