Sandro Tonali: How Much Manchester United Are Ready to Pay to Secure Newcastle Midfielder

Manchester United are reportedly ready to make a major financial commitment to provide Michael Carrick with a technically gifted and physically commanding midfield setup.

Atalanta’s Brazilian powerhouse Ederson is expected to be the first of at least two incoming signings. The €45 million deal has not caused much buzz among fans, but United technical director Jason Wilcox is said to be a strong admirer of the player, believing Ederson’s physicality and energy make him well-suited to the Premier League.

Additionally, INEOS, the club’s ownership group, are keen to add a marquee midfielder to the squad. Reports from Italy indicate that they are ready to shatter their existing transfer record to make it happen.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via the Manchester Evening News), Newcastle United value Sandro Tonali at €115 million (£100 million) and will only consider letting him go if that figure is met this summer.

Tonali has been seeking a move away from St James’ Park since January. However, Newcastle are under no immediate pressure to grant the Italian midfielder’s request, especially after the big-money sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona.

The Magpies are now in a stronger financial position and have no desire to offload Tonali cheaply, just three years after signing him from AC Milan in a deal worth around £60 million.

Despite the hefty asking price, the Italian outlet claims that Manchester United, Arsenal, and Manchester City are not deterred. All three Premier League heavyweights are reportedly open to meeting Newcastle’s valuation.

Paul Pogba remains Manchester United’s record signing after his £89 million transfer from Juventus in 2026. A decade later, INEOS are reportedly prepared to exceed that amount for another central midfielder.

Last month, The Peoples Person reported that United could “spend close to £300 million” during this transfer window if needed.

Given that, the Red Devils appear financially capable of pursuing Tonali. The real question remains whether the box-to-box Italian — renowned for his tireless work ethic and leadership — is worth such a high transfer fee.

Manchester City are currently leading the chase for Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson, although Forest have rejected their initial offer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently stated that City view Tonali as a strong backup option should negotiations for Anderson fail to progress.

Nevertheless, several reports suggest that Tonali’s preference is to join Manchester United, as the 26-year-old believes he will receive more consistent playing time at Old Trafford — something he considers vital to his development.
