FIFA has unveiled a notable adjustment to its matchday protocol that will require every member of each squad to participate in the pre-match national anthems at the upcoming World Cup. Departing from long-standing football tradition, the global governing body has stipulated that both the starting players and substitutes must gather together on the pitch before kick-off.

FIFA revises pre-match tradition

Previously, only the starting eleven for each side would stand on the field for their national anthems, facing the dugouts. Under the new framework set for the North American edition of the tournament, both starting players and substitutes will assemble around the centre circle instead. This modification forms the foundation of an all-new ceremonial concept intended to redefine how international matches are visually and emotionally experienced inside the stadium.

Infantino emphasises message of togetherness

FIFA has justified the alteration as a progressive step that spotlights collective unity rather than focusing solely on the starting line-up.

Explaining the vision behind the change, FIFA President Gianni Infantino shared: “As the FIFA World Cup continues to grow, we are constantly finding new ways to deepen the experience of the game. The pre-match ceremonies at the FIFA World Cup 2026 will embody this spirit of innovation.”

He continued, “By having all players and referees face one another in the centre circle during the national anthems, we aim to create a unified moment of pride and emotion that belongs equally to the teams and to every person in the stadium.”

Infantino added, “We are also introducing a reimagined 360-degree ceremony that will involve every fan in the venue. This will include large national flag banners, new on-pitch visual installations, player entry arches, and handheld flags to heighten anticipation – with enhanced features for select fixtures.”

He concluded, “The FIFA World Cup represents every player and every supporter, and this new pre-match ceremony embodies that belief.”

Enhanced stadium atmosphere through immersive visuals

The redesigned pre-match sequence will feature a 360-degree display concept, including the simultaneous unfurling of massive national flags on both sides of the pitch. Despite these new visual components, core football routines will remain unchanged. Players will still exchange handshakes and captains will carry out the official coin toss immediately after the anthems. Organisers hope these creative additions will turn the pitch into a shared stage for both fans in the stands and viewers watching around the world.

Inaugural match to showcase new format

The updated pre-match format will make its official debut next Thursday when co-hosts Mexico take on South Africa in the tournament opener in Mexico City. Supporters attending the first group-stage encounters will experience this newly choreographed presentation, while FIFA has indicated that even more elaborate features—such as coloured smoke and pyrotechnics—will be introduced as the competition progresses, particularly during the knockout stages.
