Vi has partnered with Meta to launch a new network-based verification method called Silent Mobile Verification (SMV). This new protocol aims to make the onboarding process on Meta's social media platforms (Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook) simpler and more secure. This network-based verification technology enables password-less logins, eliminating the need for users to request One-Time Passwords (OTPs). Vodafone Idea claims that SMV will provide enhanced protection against phishing attacks.
Understanding Silent Mobile Verification:
Soon, Vi subscribers in the country will be able to log in to Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram simply by entering their phone numbers. With SMV technology, Meta's social media apps will send verification signals over Vi's cellular network to confirm authenticity. Once verified, users can log in to the social media app without entering a password or OTP. However, if the app fails to verify the user, access will be denied.
Vi claims that SMV will fast-track processes such as new user registration, mobile number verification, login and re-login, account recovery, and authentication during security checks. The security protocol operates in the background.
This eliminates the need for users to manually enter verification credentials. Vi subscribers will not have to switch between apps for authentication or wait for verification messages, as the verification request is validated directly through the telecom network.
Furthermore, Vodafone Idea has emphasized that SMV offers superior protection against phishing and digital identity risks. The company also stated that plans are underway to make SMV available on additional platforms and partner apps.
