Real Madrid are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of Josko Gvardiol as club president Florentino Perez looks to reinforce a defence plagued by injuries and uncertainty. The Manchester City centre-back is believed to prefer a transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu, though the Premier League champions are expected to put up a strong fight to retain one of their most valuable assets.
Gvardiol features prominently on Real Madrid’s transfer radar
Reports indicate that Perez is planning a major defensive overhaul at Real Madrid, with reinforcements at the back being a top priority. The club president has identified Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries as key targets. Alongside those names, Los Blancos are also eyeing Gvardiol, according to AS.
The report further claims that Gvardiol has expressed his openness to joining the Spanish giants. Madrid view the Croatian international as an appealing option due to his technical quality and versatility, though any potential deal will depend heavily on the financial terms involved.
Addressing Madrid’s defensive shortage at the Bernabeu
The interest in Gvardiol stems from Real Madrid’s urgent need for stability at the back. With David Alaba and Dani Carvajal departing, and Eder Militao sidelined with a long-term knee injury until late October, the coaching staff find themselves short of reliable options. Additionally, Antonio Rudiger’s recurring fitness issues and uncertainty surrounding Raul Asencio’s future have made the need for defensive reinforcements even more pressing. As a result, Konate and Dumfries may not be the only defensive additions targeted this summer.
Gvardiol’s adaptability is seen as one of his major strengths by the Madrid hierarchy. While he is among the world’s elite centre-backs, he is equally capable of performing at left-back. This “two-for-one” quality makes him particularly valuable for Madrid, especially with Fran Garcia expected to leave in the summer and Ferland Mendy’s fitness still a significant concern following yet another extended injury absence.
Man City face a challenge keeping their defensive star
The situation at the Etihad Stadium is far from straightforward. Manchester City are determined not to appear vulnerable, especially after Pep Guardiola’s exit. Reports suggest that the Premier League winners are planning to offer Gvardiol a lucrative new contract extension that would substantially increase his wages and discourage any thoughts of leaving. Still, the Croatian’s desire to wear the iconic white jersey of Real Madrid remains a major obstacle for the English club.
Although Gvardiol’s current deal runs until 2028, the player’s personal intentions could prove decisive. Historically, City have not obstructed exits for players who are determined to move on, as long as their financial valuation is met. Madrid are prepared to invest heavily to secure the 24-year-old’s services but are cautious about paying what they deem to be an inflated or “out-of-market” price. Having spent €90 million to sign him from RB Leipzig in 2023, City are unlikely to sell for less, though persistent pressure from the player could influence their stance.
Transfer tug-of-war expected to heat up
Real Madrid are set to continue evaluating the financial feasibility of a deal as they look to reshape their squad. While the Spanish side are ready to push hard to bring Gvardiol to the Bernabeu, they remain reluctant to overspend beyond their valuation.
Manchester City, for their part, retain a strong negotiating position given that the defender is tied to a long-term contract until 2028. Ultimately, any potential transfer could hinge on Madrid’s ability to meet City’s demands and on whether Gvardiol decides to press for a move away from the Etihad.
