John Arne Riise has confessed that he broke down in tears when he was informed he had to leave Liverpool in 2008, bringing an end to his memorable spell of nearly 200 appearances for the club.

During his years at Anfield, Riise became a cult hero among supporters, known for his powerful left foot, relentless energy, and solid defensive performances that contributed to Liverpool’s triumphs in the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

However, the Norwegian admits he did not push himself as hard as he should have during his final season at the club, a lapse he believes cost him his place.

“I got too comfortable with my role at the club and in the team,” Riise told FFT on behalf of BetVictor Online Casino. “Honestly, I can only blame myself for not maintaining my highest work rate.”

Recalling one of the most difficult moments of his professional life, Riise spoke about the meeting where Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez informed him that his time with the club had come to an end.

“There were two matches left in the season,” Riise remembered. “I was unexpectedly called in, and he simply said, ‘It’s time to move on.’”

Riise continued, “What I appreciated most was his honesty. He didn’t sugarcoat it or try to soften the message — it was straightforward: time to go. I called my agent in tears because I was devastated. But he told me, ‘Don’t worry, clubs will be lining up for you.’”

“A few days later, Roma came in with an offer, and I joined them. Still, that wasn’t how I wanted my Liverpool story to end. I had some of the best years of my career there — we won trophies, and the team spirit was fantastic.”

At the time, Riise had been preparing himself for competition from Andrea Dossena, the left-back arriving from Udinese who was expected to take his place. Yet Benitez had already made his decision, and Riise never got the chance to fight for his spot.

Looking back now, Riise admits he made the situation easier for Benitez by letting his standards drop during the 2007/08 campaign. “I allowed myself to get complacent in that last year,” he said. “I didn’t put in the same hard work I used to. I got too comfortable.”
