Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has shared his thoughts on the club’s managerial hunt, highlighting Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as a strong candidate to take charge at Anfield. The former Reds skipper, however, cautioned that Iraola will face tough competition for one of the most prestigious positions in global football after Arne Slot’s departure.
Gerrard supports Iraola for the Liverpool job
Following the major shake-up in Liverpool’s management, Gerrard identified Iraola as a leading option to guide the team forward. Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard praised the Spaniard’s work with Bournemouth and acknowledged how his tactical approach could fit the Liverpool philosophy. “I think potentially, yes. I think he’s done a fabulous job at Bournemouth. I think his style would suit Liverpool,” Gerrard said.
Nonetheless, Gerrard emphasized that the position at such a storied club would naturally attract interest from top coaches around the world. “But let’s not beat around the bush. Liverpool Football Club is an attractive job for a lot of elite managers around the world,” he continued. “So I don’t think he’ll be the only name on the table. But because of the link to Bournemouth and the guys that have come from Bournemouth to Liverpool in terms of board level, they will know him very well.”
‘The right time’ for Slot to leave
Slot’s tenure came to an end despite having secured a Premier League title during his first year. A disappointing second campaign, where Liverpool finished fifth, prompted the club’s leadership to make a difficult decision. Gerrard admitted that while the news initially came as a shock, it was ultimately justified. “The last 10 games of last season, and for the majority of this season, we haven’t looked like Liverpool. The style has been difficult to watch at times. It looks disjointed, it looks broken, and when I got the news today, of course, your initial reaction is surprise and shock, but when you analyse it properly, it’s probably the right time, in my opinion.”
Despite his criticism of the team’s recent form, Gerrard was keen to acknowledge Slot’s achievements. He praised the Dutch manager for a remarkable debut season and said he would be “remembered forever” for leading Liverpool to their 20th league triumph. However, a turbulent campaign that saw the Reds lose 19 matches proved too costly for the Fenway Sports Group hierarchy to overlook.
Return to high-intensity football
According to reports from The Telegraph, Fenway Sports Group made the decision to part ways with Slot “with enormous reluctance,” recognising his success in delivering the club’s 20th league title. Nonetheless, the club’s executives are determined to reintroduce the high-tempo, pressing style of play that was synonymous with Jurgen Klopp’s era. This shift in direction is said to align with the views of star forward Mohamed Salah, who had become increasingly frustrated with the team’s lack of tactical clarity during their recent struggles.
Search for a new tactical identity
Iraola’s reputation for implementing a dynamic, high-pressing system has made him the front-runner for the role. However, other high-profile names have also been linked with the vacancy. Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann and Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique are both reportedly under consideration as Liverpool aim to appoint a coach capable of restoring their supremacy in the Premier League. The timing of this managerial search has caused frustration among sections of the fanbase, especially after Xabi Alonso opted to join Chelsea.
With the position now officially vacant, Liverpool’s leadership faces mounting pressure to appoint a manager who can oversee a major summer rebuild and rekindle the club’s trademark high-energy football that supporters have long cherished.
