A big issue regarding food security has come to light in Bhopal. The Municipal Corporation team raided an illegal kulfi and ice cream manufacturing unit operating near Bhadbhada intersection and sealed it. During investigation, production was found to be taking place in the factory amidst filth, which could pose a threat to people’s health.

After the complaint of the local people, the Municipal Corporation staff reached the spot. It was told that ice cream and kulfi were being prepared for a long time without necessary permission in a shed like building built between the mosque and the madrasa. Complainants also alleged that the quality of the ice and other ingredients being used in the production was questionable. During the inspection, officials found many deficiencies which raised serious questions on food safety standards.

Ignoring food safety rules proved costly

Investigation revealed that there was not adequate cleanliness in the production area. The utensils being used for making ice cream and kulfi were found dirty and basic hygiene rules were not being followed at many places. Officials say that food prepared in such an environment can prove to be harmful to people’s health.

Especially in the summer season, the demand for ice cream, kulfi and cold foods increases. At such times, if cleanliness is not maintained in manufacturing units, the risk of food poisoning, stomach infections and other diseases may increase. Municipal Corporation officials clarified that all the units manufacturing food items in the city will have to follow the prescribed rules. Similar action will continue against those who ignore the rules.

Ice cream factory sealed, samples sent for testing

During the action, the corporation imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on factory operator Shakeel Khan. Besides, the machines, raw materials and other materials used in the production were also confiscated. Officials have taken samples of ice cream, kulfi and ice and sent them to the laboratory.

Now after the investigation report comes, it will be decided whether the products were in accordance with the food safety standards or not. If any kind of adulteration or substances harmful to health are found in the investigation, then more strict action can be taken under the relevant laws. The Municipal Corporation has also appealed to the people that if they get information about dirt or violation of rules in any food manufacturing unit, then they should immediately complain.

This action taken in Bhopal once again shows that the quality and cleanliness of food items cannot be compromised in any way. The administration says that monitoring of all such establishments in the city will be increased so that safe and quality food items reach the people.
