New Delhi. For generations, it has been believed in Indian homes that applying plenty of oil to the hair makes it long, thick and strong. However, modern medical science and dermatologists have completely proved this traditional belief to be false. According to doctors, applying hair oil has no direct relation with their growth or length. This is just a myth, and using more oil than necessary can cause serious harm to the hair instead of benefits.

What is the real science of oiling?

According to experts, hair grows from follicles present deep inside the scalp. The oil cannot penetrate deep enough into the skin to grow new hair. In a way, oil acts as a natural conditioner. In particular, coconut or almond oil is an excellent conditioner for the outer part of the hair (hair shaft), which reduces dryness and frizz. Apart from this, oil forms a protective layer on the upper surface of the hair, which prevents damage caused by sunlight, pollution and chemicals. Massaging the scalp while applying oil improves blood circulation, which indirectly strengthens the hair roots.

More oil means better hair, a dangerous mistake

According to Mumbai’s famous dermatologist Dr. Shahnaz Arciwala, people often start applying more oil due to hair fall, which makes the situation worse. Excessive oil clogs the pores of the scalp, due to which the skin does not get oxygen. Apart from this, due to oil, dirt, sweat and bacteria get on the scalp. This increases the risk of ‘seborrheic dermatitis’ (stubborn dandruff) and fungal infections. Also, when a layer of dirt and oil accumulates on the scalp, the hair roots become weak and start breaking.

Doctors’ guidelines for proper hair care

India’s top dermatologist Dr. Stuti Khare Shukla has shared scientific methods for proper hair care in her research report. He said that never leave the oil on the head overnight or for several days. Applying the oil just one to two hours before shampooing is enough. According to him, oiling should be done only once or twice a week. And if your scalp is already oily, avoid applying oil.

Trust in real science

According to medical research, hair growth completely depends on genetics, hormonal balance and your diet (protein, iron, vitamins etc.). In case of severe hair fall or baldness, instead of oil, one should use minoxidil or hair growth serum with scientific actives (like Radensil, Anagen) of brands like Bare Anatomy and Minimalist on the advice of dermatologist.

Medical science states that oil is a ‘lotion or conditioner’ for hair, and not a ‘medicine’. To keep hair long and healthy, internal nutrition is more important than external oil. Protein, iron, good sleep and stress-free lifestyle are most important for fast and healthy hair growth.
