Liverpool have officially announced the departure of head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect. The Dutch manager, who faced mounting pressure following a lacklustre 2025-26 season, has been relieved of his duties. Former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is widely considered the leading contender to succeed Slot at Anfield.
Slot’s exit follows a turbulent campaign that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League, narrowly securing qualification for next season’s Champions League. This came as a major disappointment for a side that had lifted the league title under Slot’s guidance just a year earlier.
Despite his early success, Slot’s team struggled for consistency this season. Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Paris Saint-Germain and endured a heavy 4-0 defeat in the FA Cup quarter-finals. The club’s hierarchy decided that a change was necessary to get back on track.
In an official statement, Liverpool said: “Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to leave his position as head coach with immediate effect, and the process to appoint his successor is underway. He departs with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”
A joint statement from the club’s ownership added that a “change is necessary” as Liverpool look to rebuild ahead of the 2026-27 season. “There is no doubt that this was a difficult decision,” the statement read. “Arne’s contribution to Liverpool FC has been significant, meaningful, and, most importantly, successful. Our appreciation for everything he achieved could not be greater.”
The ownership further praised Slot’s leadership and professionalism: “From the moment we first met Arne, it was clear he embraced responsibility rather than avoiding it. This was evident when he led us to the Premier League title and throughout the challenges of this past season.”
They continued: “Although we have agreed that change is necessary for the club to keep progressing, this decision was not taken lightly. Arne will always hold a special place in Liverpool’s history as the coach who delivered our 20th league title, an achievement made even more impressive as it came in his first season.”
“He also guided the club through one of its most difficult times following the loss of Diogo, showing great compassion and humanity. We wish Arne every success in the next stage of his career, confident that his legacy at Liverpool will endure.”
“The conclusion we’ve reached is based on the belief that the team needs a new direction. This decision in no way diminishes Arne’s work or talent. He leaves with our gratitude, a Premier League title, and the assurance that he and his family will always be welcome at Anfield.”
Despite heavy spending in the summer transfer window, Liverpool’s performances failed to match expectations. The Reds invested around £446 million—the highest amount ever spent by a Premier League club in a single window—on players including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez. However, injuries and inconsistent form meant that few lived up to their potential.
French striker Hugo Ekitike, another major summer signing, was among the few bright spots, netting 17 goals across all competitions before an ACL injury in April curtailed his season and dashed his World Cup hopes.
Fan unrest and reported tensions between Slot and Mohamed Salah also added to the turmoil. The Egyptian forward, who is set to leave the club this summer, issued a statement urging Liverpool to return to the “heavy metal” style of football that defined Jurgen Klopp’s successful tenure.
Meanwhile, Andoni Iraola has emerged as the favourite to take over at Anfield. The Spaniard, who recently left Bournemouth, earned widespread praise for leading the Cherries to a remarkable sixth-place finish this season, following a ninth-place finish in 2024-25. Reports suggest that Liverpool may also consider other candidates, including Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoenes and Lens manager Pierre Sage, but Iraola is currently seen as the frontrunner for the role.
