New Delhi: UPI stands for Unified Payments Interface. It is a system developed in India that allows you to transfer money between bank accounts using your smartphone. It is like a digital wallet. But it can be linked to multiple bank accounts and works on different apps. In 2016, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) embarked on a mission to transform the country's payment systems.
The seamless transactions of UPI have boosted the digital economy. It has become easier for businesses to accept digital payments, which has boosted e-commerce and other online activities. However, it has also become important to use it safely while making everyday transactions.
Learn UPI security tips
- Enter UPI PIN only to deduct money from your account. UPI PIN is not required to receive money.
- Check the recipient's name while doing UPI ID verification. Do not make payment without verification.
- Enter UPI PIN only on the UPI PIN page of the app. Do not share UPI PIN with anyone.
- Scan QR only to pay, not to receive money.
- Do not download any screen sharing or SMS forwarding app just because someone asked you to and without understanding its utility.
Security tips for using UPI
- Keep your PIN safe-Never share your UPI PIN with anyone. It is as confidential as your ATM PIN or Internet banking password. Always enter your UPI PIN in private settings to prevent others from viewing it.
- Beware of phishing scams-Be wary of emails, messages or calls claiming to be from your bank or UPI service provider that ask for your PIN, OTP or other sensitive information.
- Do not download suspicious links or attachments-Do not download links or attachments from any unknown sources.
- Use the official app-Download UPI apps only from official app stores like Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Avoid using third-party websites or unverified sources to download apps.
- Verify transaction details-Double-check the recipient's UPI ID or mobile number before confirming the transaction. Make sure the amount entered is correct to avoid accidental overpayment.
- Keep your app updated-Regularly update your UPI app to the latest version to avail new features.
- Monitor your transactions-Check your bank statements and UPI transaction history regularly for any authorized transactions. Report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately.
- Set transaction limits-Set daily transaction limits to minimize the risk in case your UPI account is compromised.
- Use app lock-Enable the app lock features available in most UPI apps to add an extra layer of security.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi-Avoid doing UPI transactions on public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Use a secure and private internet connection.
