In this scorching summer season, cold water from the fridge may make your throat wet, but water from an earthen pot (Matka) is considered the best for health. The pleasant aroma of soil and naturally cool water not only quenches thirst but also keeps the body’s metabolism healthy. However, most of the people buy a new pitcher and start using it by simply filling it with water, which is wrong. If care is not taken in the maintenance and cleaning of the pitcher, bacteria can grow in it. Let us know the correct way to use and polish the pot.

Do this work first after bringing a new pot

Do not fill the pot with drinking water immediately after bringing it from the market. First of all, wash the pitcher thoroughly with plain water. After this, fill it with water and leave it for at least 24 hours. This process activates the pores of the soil, which improves the process of water cooling. Next day throw away this water and fill with fresh water again. Keep in mind that never wash the pitcher with soap or dishwash, because the clay absorbs chemicals which can be harmful to health.

Right way to clean pot and recipe of ‘rock salt’

The pitcher must be cleaned every 2-3 days. Do not use a brush or rubbing net to clean the grease or moss inside the pot, this may damage the pot. Instead, add some lukewarm water and a teaspoon of rock salt to the pitcher. Now clean the pitcher by shaking it and then wash it with cold water. Salt acts as a natural disinfectant and prevents the pores of the soil from clogging, keeping the water cooler for longer periods of time.

Follow these smart tips to keep water cool

The water in the pot is cooled by the technique of evaporation. To make it more effective, place a thick layer of sand at the bottom of the pitcher and keep that sand wet. Also, soak a cotton cloth and wrap it around the pitcher. As the water in the cloth dries, the temperature inside the pitcher will drop. Always keep the pot in a place where there is good ventilation, because in a closed place the pot is not able to cool the water effectively.

Caution: Is Your Matka ‘Leaking’ Water?

People often complain that water droplets are accumulating on the outside of the pot or that it is ‘sweating’. Actually, this is a sign that the pitcher is right. When water comes out through the fine pores of the soil, it comes in contact with the air and cools the water inside. If your pot is completely dry on the outside, it means that its holes are clogged and will no longer cool water. In such a situation, the time has come to change it. Always use a pot with a lid and use a pot with a long handle to collect water so that the germs on your hands do not enter the water.
