The Argentina national team is set to face Algeria in a Group J match at Kansas City Stadium tomorrow morning.

The Argentina vs Algeria fixture is scheduled to kick off at 08:00 WIB on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Captain and star forward Lionel Messi will make his record-breaking sixth World Cup appearance, alongside his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Argentina topped the South American World Cup qualifying standings and head into the tournament in exceptional form.

La Albiceleste have won seven consecutive matches and remain unbeaten since their 1-0 defeat to Ecuador in the World Cup qualifiers in September 2025.

Argentina's last two warm-up games produced convincing results — a 2-0 win over Honduras on June 7 and a 3-0 victory against Iceland on Wednesday, June 10.

Valentin Barco, Messi, and Thiago Almada found the net in the dominant performance against Iceland.

Meanwhile, Algeria appear to be in strong form heading into their opening match, having remained unbeaten in all their friendly fixtures this year.

The North African side crushed Guatemala 7-0 and drew 0-0 with Uruguay in March. They achieved their best result in June with a 1-0 win over the Netherlands on June 3, courtesy of a late strike from Anis Hadj Moussa, followed by a commanding 4-0 victory against Bolivia on Thursday, June 11.

Moussa once again scored against Bolivia, adding to two goals from Amine Gouiri and one from Aissa Mandi to seal a comprehensive win.

Algeria did not concede a single goal during those friendlies, and their defence looked solid — a positive sign for the Fennec Foxes as they prepare to face Argentina.

Argentina and Algeria will also meet Group J opponents Austria and Jordan in the coming weeks.

Head-to-Head and Statistics: Argentina vs Algeria

Algeria and Argentina have met only once before, with the South American side claiming victory in a friendly match in June 2007.

That thrilling encounter, held at Camp Nou in Barcelona, ended 4-3 in favour of La Albiceleste.

Lionel Messi scored twice, while Carlos Tevez and Esteban Cambiasso added one goal each. Algeria’s goals came from a brace by Nadir Belhadj and a strike from Anthar Yahia.

Argentina have won the World Cup three times and enter this tournament as defending champions, having lifted the trophy in Qatar 2022.

Match Prediction: Argentina vs Algeria

Argentina are expected to dominate possession and attack primarily through the flanks, with special focus on the right wing, where Messi typically operates.

Set pieces could prove lethal for the South American giants, and Algeria must avoid conceding free kicks too close to their goal.

The Fennec Foxes will rely on their trademark compact defence to frustrate Argentina, and once they regain possession, they will look to launch quick counter-attacks through Mohamed Amoura and Riyad Mahrez.

Argentina are the favourites to win this match, though Algeria are capable of providing strong resistance. Goals are expected from both sides.

Predicted Score: Argentina 3-1 Algeria

Messi Ready to Lead the Defending Champions

This match marks the group stage debut for both teams and serves as an early test for Argentina as the reigning champions.

Argentina arrive full of confidence after a consistent qualifying campaign, continuing to rely on the leadership and brilliance of Lionel Messi.

On the other hand, Vladimir Petkovic’s Algeria come in as dark horses. The North African side boast several dangerous players and will aim to spring a surprise in their opening fixture.

Joni, an Argentina supporter from Jambi, said that in terms of squad quality, Argentina hold the upper hand in nearly every area.

The combination of Messi, Julián Álvarez, and other experienced players is expected to dominate ball possession.

However, Algeria are known for their rapid counter-attacks and solid tactical organisation.

“Since this is the first group match, both teams might play cautiously and avoid an overly open game,” he said.

“Goals are likely to come from Argentina’s sharper front line, while Algeria may put up a fight but will struggle to break down the defending champions,” he concluded.
