IIT Kanpur has launched a new four-year degree course starting from the 2026-27 academic session. Students interested in cybersecurity can enroll in the Bachelor of Cybersecurity program. The course will commence in July 2026 and be conducted through the Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems. Notably, admission to this course does not require a JEE Advanced score.
Admission will be based on a specific selection process. Students will be shortlisted based on their performance in JEE Main and any prior work in the cybersecurity domain, followed by a test that includes a hackathon.
According to IIT Kanpur, this four-year degree course is designed to combine academic training with practical experience; students will spend the first two years on campus studying cybersecurity concepts through coursework and lab-based training. Subsequently, they will have the opportunity to undertake internships with government security organizations during the remaining two years. Throughout this period, their training will involve working on cybersecurity-related projects and addressing real-world security challenges. Essentially, the course enables students to gain practical experience alongside their academic studies.
Why was this course launched?
IIT Kanpur stated that the course was introduced in response to the growing importance of cybersecurity and the need for trained professionals in this field. Institute Director Manindra Agrawal remarked that cybersecurity has become a critical area, particularly for safeguarding digital infrastructure and national systems.
Combining academic education with practical experience
Meanwhile, Nitin Saxena, Dean of the Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems, stated that the course aims to integrate academic education with practical experience to prepare professionals for the cybersecurity sector. IIT Kanpur stated that a dedicated webpage is being developed for this course and is expected to be operational by next week.
