Leeds United icon Marcelo Bielsa has strongly indicated what his future holds after the World Cup, with the Uruguay head coach making a surprising revelation about his plans beyond 2026.

Bielsa has given a significant clue that his time in charge of Uruguay is nearing its end. The former Leeds United manager, still revered in West Yorkshire, implied that his association with La Celeste will likely conclude following the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

An approaching farewell for 'El Loco'?

The 70-year-old Argentine strategist has led the South American powerhouse since May 2023. Over the course of 36 matches, he has instilled his trademark high-pressing, intense brand of football, guiding Uruguay to a third-place finish in the 2024 Copa America. However, his recent comments suggest that the journey with the national team could soon reach its conclusion.

Speaking at an event organised by the Uruguayan Football Association, Bielsa was strikingly open about his career outlook. “Our job ends with the World Cup,” he remarked. “It is a miracle in any professional’s sporting career to participate in the World Cup. I will always be grateful to Uruguay for giving me the chance to experience a competition like the World Cup.”

Success and strains in Montevideo

Bielsa’s tenure has been a blend of tactical ingenuity and the typical intensity associated with his coaching style. While his win percentage stands at nearly 42%, his demanding approach has occasionally clashed with senior figures within the squad. Notably, veteran forward Luis Suarez has previously criticised Bielsa’s off-field management and the strict environment he fosters.

Despite such internal disagreements, the Uruguayan public has largely rallied behind the rejuvenated national team. As Uruguay prepares for the 2026 World Cup, there is cautious optimism that they can successfully navigate a tough Group H alongside Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia. Reports from Montevideo have reinforced Bielsa’s remarks, indicating that he indeed plans to step down after the tournament concludes.

Return to football’s biggest stage

For Bielsa, the 2026 World Cup offers one final opportunity to solidify his reputation on the global stage, having previously managed Argentina and Chile. The veteran tactician remains one of the most influential figures in contemporary football management. His time at Elland Road continues to define his legacy, particularly after leading Leeds United to the Championship title in the 2019-2020 season and securing promotion to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

Earlier this year, Bielsa made an emotional return to England for a friendly against Gareth Southgate’s England side at Wembley in March. The match ended 1-1, featuring Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has since missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s final England squad selection.

Redemption on the horizon after 2002 heartbreak

Bielsa’s previous World Cup journey with Argentina in 2002 ended in disappointment as La Albiceleste suffered an unexpected first-round elimination. Now, with Uruguay, the experienced tactician is determined to rewrite that chapter and leave an enduring legacy in what could be his final act on football’s grandest platform.
