Harry Maguire’s family has reacted angrily to Thomas Tuchel’s decision to drop the Manchester United defender from England’s 2026 World Cup squad. The experienced centre-back, who has been a key figure in the Three Lions’ defence for nearly ten years, saw his place in the national team come under threat following Tuchel’s bold and uncompromising overhaul of the squad.
Family slams ‘disgraceful’ Tuchel call
The aftermath of Tuchel’s World Cup squad announcement took a personal turn as Maguire’s family voiced their outrage against the England manager. The 33-year-old’s exclusion, alongside other notable absentees like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, sparked a wave of frustration from his relatives, who described the move as “disgraceful.”
Maguire’s wife, Fern, shared her sorrow publicly, writing: “Beyond devastated for you. There was nothing more you could have done to show your worth. I don’t need to tell you how respected you are, it’s just unfortunate you were up against one person’s opinion.” His mother, Zoe, echoed the sentiment, saying: “Absolutely disgusted. You couldn’t have done any more. Keep your head high… Disgraceful.”
Red Devils star ‘shocked and gutted’
Despite featuring in 24 matches for Manchester United this season and returning to the England setup during the March international window, Maguire’s hopes of appearing in the World Cup in North America were crushed. The defender believed his consistent form at Old Trafford would secure his spot, but Tuchel’s decision left him unexpectedly sidelined.
In a heartfelt statement, Maguire said: “I was confident I could have played a big role for my country this summer after the season I’ve had. I’m shocked and gutted by this decision. Representing England has always been an honour for me. I wish the team every success this summer.” His brothers also voiced their anger, with Laurence calling the decision a “shambles” and Joe labelling it “the worst decision I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Keane enters the fray
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has backed Maguire, questioning Tuchel’s reasoning for excluding a player who has repeatedly delivered for England in major tournaments. The outspoken pundit defended Maguire’s track record, arguing that the manager had made a serious misjudgment.
“What is Thomas Tuchel thinking here? It’s an absolute joke. It’s a circus, it really is,” Keane said passionately. “You’re talking about Harry Maguire — a proper, old-school defender who’s gone into the trenches and delivered for England time and again.”
Tuchel defends ruthless cull
Despite the backlash from Maguire’s family and supporters, Tuchel maintained his composure. The England manager admitted he was “surprised” by Maguire’s public reaction, especially after their private discussion.
Explaining his decision, Tuchel stated: “We decided to stay with the central defenders who carried us through the autumn. I was surprised to read Maguire’s statement because we had a private conversation where he could share his feelings.” With the Three Lions set to take on Croatia on June 17, all eyes will be on whether Tuchel’s bold choices will steer England to World Cup success or result in an early exit from the United States.
