Mumbai: Celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim has announced a strict professional stance, stating that he and his team will no longer work with actors whose managers or representatives mistreat crew members and creative professionals.
The decision has sparked widespread discussion across the film industry about workplace etiquette, respect, and the treatment of behind-the-scenes workers who contribute significantly to an actor’s public image.
Strong statement shared on social media
In a detailed Instagram post shared on May 15, Hakim said that disrespectful behaviour towards hairstylists, makeup artists, assistants and other crew members had become increasingly difficult to ignore.
Without naming any actor or management team, he emphasised that authority or celebrity status does not give anyone the right to humiliate or demean professionals working on sets, shoots, or public appearances.
Hakim said his team would now take a firm stand against such behaviour and would avoid associating with clients whose teams fail to maintain basic respect and dignity in professional environments.
“Respect the artists behind the star”
Hakim urged the industry to acknowledge the contribution of those who work behind the camera and behind celebrity appearances. He said these professionals should not be treated as “just staff”, but as essential creative contributors.
He highlighted the effort involved in styling actors for films, red carpets, advertisements and photoshoots, pointing out that each appearance is the result of hours of planning, preparation and execution.
According to him, creative teams often work under tight schedules, long hours and intense pressure, frequently sacrificing personal time, family commitments and rest to ensure actors are ready for shoots and events.
Concerns over behaviour on sets
The hairstylist also noted that he has personally observed instances where managers and representatives behaved rudely with crew members or passed on frustration to junior staff on sets.
He added that such behaviour not only affects morale but can also reflect poorly on the actors themselves, even if they are not directly involved or aware of the situation.
Hakim stressed that professionalism and respect are essential for maintaining healthy working relationships in the entertainment industry, especially in high-pressure environments such as film productions.
“True stars uplift people around them”
In his statement, Hakim said that genuine success in the industry is reflected in how people are treated behind the scenes.
“A truly powerful star never needs people around them who insult others to prove importance,” he wrote, underlining his belief that respect is a core part of professionalism.
He reiterated that his team’s decision is aimed at protecting creative professionals from repeated mistreatment and ensuring a healthier work culture within the industry.
