Kembhavi/Yadgir: A strong storm accompanied by heavy rain caused major damage in Kembhavi town of Yadgir district on Sunday evening. The roof of the SBH Shadi Mahal collapsed due to the impact of the powerful winds. Hundreds of people attending a wedding escaped narrowly from danger.
The storm hit the town suddenly on Sunday evening. Huge iron beams and roofing sheets of the marriage hall were blown hundreds of metres away due to the strong winds, showing the intensity of the storm.
A wedding function had been scheduled at the Shadi Mahal on Sunday evening. Fortunately, only a few people were inside the hall when the roof collapsed. However, around 100 people, including relatives and family members of the bride and groom, were present in the premises.
As the roof started collapsing, people ran in different directions and moved to safer places. A few people suffered minor injuries, but no deaths were reported. The families involved in the wedding expressed relief after escaping a major tragedy.
Eyewitnesses describe panic
Eyewitnesses said dark clouds gathered suddenly and strong winds began blowing in the evening.
“Within seconds, the entire roof of the marriage hall was blown away. Since most people had already come outside after the wedding programmes, a major disaster was avoided. Otherwise, it could have led to many deaths,” eyewitnesses said.
Property loss estimated at Rs 60 lakh
The storm caused severe damage to the marriage hall infrastructure. According to initial estimates, the collapse damaged the roof, iron pillars, lighting systems and costly furniture inside the building.
Officials estimate the total property loss at more than Rs 60 lakh.
Heavy rain and strong winds lash Kembhavi
Kembhavi town witnessed heavy rain along with strong winds and thunder on Sunday evening. Cloudy weather had covered the area since afternoon.
Several parked bikes on the main bazaar road fell due to the strong winds. Plastic sheets covering roadside shops and pushcart stalls were also blown away.
Electric pole falls on man in Yadgir
In another incident, a streetlight electric pole fell on a man in a ward of Yadgir city due to strong winds. Jescom officials said the injured person is being treated at a private hospital.
