Mumbai Indians pulled off one of the most dramatic chases of the TATA IPL 2026 season, hunting down 201 with one ball remaining to defeat Punjab Kings by six wickets at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.
In a contest that swung repeatedly under the mountain lights, it was Tilak Varma who emerged as the difference maker with a breathtaking unbeaten 75 off just 33 deliveries, guiding Mumbai home and leaving Punjab Kings staring at a fifth straight defeat.
Punjab Kings Recover Through Prabhsimran and Omarzai
Stand in captain Jasprit Bumrah elected to field first after winning the toss, and Mumbai’s pacers initially found movement on a surface offering uneven bounce.
Punjab Kings, however, countered aggressively through Prabhsimran Singh, who attacked from the outset with a fluent 57 off 32 balls. The opener struck six fours and four sixes, ensuring the hosts maintained momentum despite early pressure from Mumbai’s seamers.
Just when Punjab looked set for a massive total, Shardul Thakur changed the course of the innings with a superb spell of change-ups and cutters. The all-rounder repeatedly struck at crucial moments to derail Punjab’s middle overs acceleration and finished with outstanding figures of 4/39.
Reflecting on the innings turnaround, Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer admitted Omarzai’s late surge rescued the total.
“At a point, we were looking at 170 to 180, and he simply changed the momentum towards us. Getting to 200 was a commendable performance.”
Azmatullah Omarzai provided exactly that late surge. Playing his first game of the season, the Afghan all-rounder blasted 38 from just 17 deliveries to lift Punjab Kings to 200/8 after 20 overs.
Rickelton Explodes Before Chahal Strikes
Mumbai Indians began the chase explosively through Ryan Rickelton, who dismantled the Punjab attack during the Powerplay. The left-hander hammered 48 off only 23 balls, peppering the boundary with four fours and four sixes.
Rohit Sharma struggled to find fluency at the other end before Yuzvendra Chahal produced a superb delivery to bowl him for 25. Naman Dhir’s dismissal shortly after tightened the contest and shifted pressure back onto Mumbai.
The surface remained tricky, with variable pace and bounce making strokeplay difficult. Bumrah later explained how Mumbai identified the conditions early.
“The wicket in this game looked a little drier. Holding your length was the key. If you bowl too short or too full, at the altitude, the ball flies.”
Tilak Varma Turns the Chase Around
With the required rate climbing rapidly, Tilak Varma took control of the innings with remarkable composure. He paced the chase perfectly, absorbing pressure before unleashing a brutal assault in the death overs.
The turning point arrived after Mumbai’s second timeout. Tilak revealed the confidence behind his calculated approach.
“We thought to take the game deep, and I was believing in myself, was holding my shape and backing myself.”
He added: “When we had the second timeout, I was talking to the coach that just one big over, we will finish off the game. I was just waiting for that one big over.”
That over arrived against Chahal as Tilak dismantled the leg spinner and swung the momentum decisively towards Mumbai.
Will Jacks then provided the perfect finishing support with an unbeaten 25 off 10 balls. The pair added 56 runs in just 20 deliveries to completely deflate Punjab’s bowling attack.
