Synopsis

Delhi saw a 15.1% drop in overall registered crimes in 2024, with total cases falling to around 2.8 lakh. However, concerning trends persist in violent offenses and crimes against children, where Delhi reported the highest numbers among major metros, particularly in child abduction cases.

Data released by the National Crime Records Bureau for 2024 showed a notable decline in the number of crimes registered in Delhi, even as several categories of violent and targeted offences continued to raise serious concerns for law enforcement agencies.

The figures, released on Wednesday, indicated that overall IPC and BNS crimes in the national capital fell by 15.1% compared with the previous year. After crossing 3.2 lakh cases in 2023 — nearly 8% higher than in 2022 — the total number of cases dropped to around 2.8 lakh in 2024.

However, a closer look at the data paints a more layered picture, with the impact on victims remaining significant despite the decline in overall crime numbers.

Crimes against women accounted for 7,827 registered cases in 2024, while the number of survivors or victims stood slightly higher at 7,904, suggesting that several incidents involved multiple women. In rape cases, 1,058 FIRs were filed, but the number of survivors reached 1,089.

A similar trend was visible in violent crimes. The NCRB recorded 504 murder cases during the year, resulting in 522 victims. Road accidents also remained highly fatal, with 1,521 accidents leading to 1,658 deaths.

The data was particularly concerning in relation to crimes against children, where Delhi continued to report the highest numbers among major metropolitan cities. In 2024, the city recorded 7,662 cases involving children, compared with 3,374 in Mumbai and 2,026 in Bengaluru.

The disparity was especially stark in child abduction cases. Delhi registered 5,404 such cases, far exceeding Mumbai’s 1,831 and Bengaluru’s 1,136. The figures suggest that for every child abducted in Bengaluru, nearly five were kidnapped in Delhi.
