Diego Simeone appeared to shove Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta towards the end of the Gunners' Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Atletico boss Simeone cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as his side desperately sought a late equaliser at the Emirates Stadium.
The Argentine's temper reached boiling point when former Atleti chief Berta, who spent more than 12 years working alongside Simeone in Madrid, attempted to attract the attention of referee Daniel Siebert. As the clock crept into the fifth minute of stoppage time, Berta was urging Siebert to blow the final whistle, and Simeone was far from happy with the Arsenal chief.
The Atletico manager came storming across from his technical area to confront an agitated Berta before shoving him back towards the tunnel.
Members of staff from both clubs stepped in to separate Simeone and Berta before the UEFA fourth official intervened to defuse the situation. Simeone subsequently returned to his dugout and barked instructions to his players as they desperately pushed for an equaliser.
Atletico were trailing 2-1 on aggregate and 1-0 on the night after Bukayo Saka netted a first-half opener for the Gunners. Saka tapped home from close range after Leandro Trossard's effort was parried out by Jan Oblak.
Simeone's side created opportunities in the second half to draw level, with Giuliano Simeone and Alexander Sorloth squandering the best of those chances, ultimately bowing out of the competition at the semi-final stage.
As for Arsenal, it marks a first Champions League final in two decades and the Gunners are poised to meet the victor of the other semi-final clash between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest later this month.
Speaking after the match, Declan Rice shared his thoughts on the result and the atmosphere in the Arsenal dressing room following such a monumental victory. "It is chaos [in the dressing room]," Rice told Amazon Prime. "I don't think you can underestimate what we have done in this competition up to this point.
"I think we have every right to celebrate that moment. The most prestigious competition in club football. We are just trying to soak it all in.
"We knew coming into the game what was at stake. If you can't get up for that, then you can't get up for any game of football. When we went 1-0 up, I knew we were going to win. I could feel something special building."
