Now defense equipment will be manufactured on a large scale in Abu Dhabi. Tawazun Council for Defense Enablement and AD Ports Group have jointly decided to create Al Selmiyyah Defense Industrial Free Zone. With this step, UAE will produce goods for its own security and will reduce dependence on outside countries. This project is considered very important for the country’s security and future preparations.

Why is Al Selmiyyah Defense Zone being built?

This zone is being developed especially to increase manufacturing in the defense sector. Its main objective is to bring the world’s biggest companies (OEMs) here so that weapons and defense equipment can be produced inside the UAE. This will not only increase local production, but will also expand industrial operations and strengthen the long-term defense capabilities of the country.

What did government officials say on this project?

Dr. Nasser Humaid Al Nuaimi, Secretary-General of Tawazun Council, said that the council will work to enable the defense sector and connect the industrial ecosystem to prepare for the future. At the same time, Khalifa Ayada Al Hameli said that such special industrial zones will help in promoting defense manufacturing, strengthening the supply chain and supporting export-based production.

UAE is currently taking several steps to strengthen its hold in the defense sector. Some major recent developments are as follows:

• Make it in the Emirates 2026: Tawazun Council presented its strategies for the defense sector at the event, held at ADNEC Center Abu Dhabi from 4 to 7 May 2026.
• Agreement with Korea: On 5 May 2026, Tawazun Council signed an MoU with Korea’s LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A) to make UAE a global defense manufacturing hub.
• SAHA Expo: The UAE showcased its defense capabilities and discussed technology exchange at the SAHA Expo held in Istanbul, Turkey from 5 to 9 May 2026.
