In Satyayuga, there was a righteous king named Prithu. A Vedagya Brahmin named Dayadeva lived in his kingdom. He had four sons. When time came, Dayadev got all four of them married. Dayadev's elder daughter-in-law was a great devotee of Lord Shri Ganesh and she used to fast on Sankatnashan Ganesh Chaturthi since childhood.

After marriage, the elder daughter-in-law sought permission from her father-in-law to observe fast there too, but he refused, but still the elder daughter-in-law silently started observing Chaturthi fast. After some time the elder daughter-in-law gave birth to a beautiful son. After the birth of the child, the mother-in-law started opposing the Chaturthi fast.
Being forced, the elder daughter-in-law abandoned the Sankashti Chaturthi fast, due to which Lord Shri Ganesh got angry. When the elder daughter-in-law's son became young, he got him married to a suitable girl. One day after marriage, Shri Ganesh ji kidnapped the son of the elder daughter-in-law. When this happened, there was chaos in the entire family.
The daughter-in-law of the elder daughter-in-law also became distraught after hearing this and started fasting on Sankatnashan Ganesh Chaturthi for the well-being of her husband. One day a Brahmin came to his house to beg for alms and asked for food. The daughter-in-law worshiped the Brahmin and made him sit on the seat, served food and provided clothes, dakshina etc.
Pleased, the Brahmin said, 'I am happy with your service, ask for what you want, I am Ganesha himself who has come here pleased with your devotion and devotion.' Hearing the words of Lord Ganesha, the newly married girl immediately prayed for her husband to come home safely. Lord Ganesha immediately gave this boon to the girl.
At the same time, a Brahmin named Somasharma found the lost husband of the newly married woman in the forest and brought him to the city. Dayadev was very happy to see his grandson safe and started worshiping Lord Ganesha. That day was Jyeshtha Krishna Chaturthi. Since then the whole family started fasting on Chaturthi Tithi.
