At least nine people died after a fire broke out in a residential building in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar in the early hours of Sunday. Officials said the incident occurred around 3.48 am in a four-storey building in Vivek Vihar Phase-I. Emergency teams reached the site soon after receiving the alert.
Rescue and search operations are still ongoing to locate any remaining victims.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Rajendra Prasad Meena said the fire broke out in a house located on the second floor of the building. He confirmed that emergency teams responded immediately after receiving the alert and managed to control the situation.
"Fire broke out in a house in a four-story building in Vivek Vihar, with casualties on the second floor," He told ANI. "Early in the morning, we got a call about a fire. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control. We got the call at around 4 AM," he added.
Residents reported that several people were trapped inside the building when the fire started. Rohit, a local resident, said the incident may have been triggered by an air conditioner blast.
"A blast in the AC triggered the fire... Around 12-15 were rescued. However, 4-5 people are still missing. The fire started at around 03:13 am... Fire tenders arrived at around 3:35 am... Efforts are being made to extinguish the fire," he said.
Another resident, Charanjit Singh, said multiple fire tenders reached the spot and carried out rescue operations from balconies and windows.
"More than 10 vehicles (fire tenders) arrived. The fire brigade rescued around 20 people through the balcony... but I think some people from the backside flats were still able to come outside... I think 1 or 2 families are still under the building," he said.
Authorities said further details are awaited as rescue efforts continue at the site.
