Boat capsize in MP's Jabalpur: Toll rises to 13, body of last missing person recovered

The toll in the cruise boat capsize in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district rose to 13 on Sunday after the bodies of the last two missing persons were recovered from the Bargi dam, The Hindu quoted the collector as saying.

Bargi Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Anjul Ayank Mishra told PTI that bodies of five-year-old Mayuram and his uncle Kamraj, who was in his fifties, were recovered on Sunday.

On Thursday, the boat, operated by the state tourism department, capsized in the Bargi dam area during a storm.

More than 200 personnel, including teams from the Army, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Emergency Response Force and local divers, were involved in a three-day search operation.

Unidentified police officials said that 41 passengers were on board the vessel at the time of the incident. Of them, 28 were rescued.

On Friday, the Madhya Pradesh government ordered an inquiry into the incident, dismissed three crew members and banned the operation of similar vessels pending further review, The Hindu reported.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday said that the “strictest possible action” will be taken against those found guilty.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives, while the injured will receive Rs 50,000.
