Vishal Bhardwaj recently opened up about his late friend Irrfan Khan's initial doubts regarding the casting of Saif Ali Khan as Langda Tyagi in the film Omkara. Irrfan believed he would have been a more suitable choice for the role.

During a discussion following a special screening of the documentary A Story That Refused to Die, which focuses on Irrfan's film Paan Singh Tomar, Bhardwaj recalled Irrfan's reaction upon learning that Saif was chosen for the character in the 2006 adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello.

Bhardwaj quoted Irrfan as saying, 'If you have Saif playing Langda Tyagi, it will be a significant achievement if he even agrees to alter his hairstyle. I should be the one doing this role.' However, by that time, Saif was already confirmed for the part, and filming had commenced. Bhardwaj expressed that had Irrfan taken on the role, it would have been a completely different experience.

Although Irrfan did not appear in Omkara, he played a crucial role in Bhardwaj's first film Maqbool (2003) and had a significant part in the third installment, Haider (2014).

Initially, Irrfan was hesitant to accept a minor role in Haider, but after Bhardwaj encouraged him to read the script, he recognized the film's political significance and agreed to participate.

Bhardwaj and Irrfan had their share of disagreements, including a two-year period of silence following a misunderstanding over the film Ishqiya (2010), which Bhardwaj produced.

Their relationship thawed during the making of 7 Khoon Maaf, where Bhardwaj reached out to Irrfan, who was eager to join the project. In this 2011 film, Irrfan portrayed the third husband of the lead character, Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Bhardwaj remarked, 'For this role, I could only think of Irrfan. When I called him, he responded, 'I’ve been waiting for your call. I don’t need to hear about the role; I just want to convince you that I’ll do anything you offer me.' He truly was a wonderful person.'

Bhardwaj continues to feel the void left by Irrfan, especially when he develops new ideas. The documentary A Story That Refused to Die, which showcases the making of Paan Singh Tomar, highlights Irrfan's creative process and behind-the-scenes moments.

Directed by Ranjeeta Kaur and produced by Angad Films and Tigmanshu Dhulia Films, the documentary was presented on the sixth anniversary of Irrfan's passing at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre.
