'Aliens, nukes, or...': 17 earthquakes shake Area 51 in US in 24 hours, internet goes wild
ET Online | May 1, 2026 11:19 PM CST

Synopsis

A cluster of at least 17 earthquakes, ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 4.4, was recorded near Area 51 within 24 hours. While earthquake swarms are common, the shallow depth of some tremors has raised unusual questions. The proximity to the former Nevada Test Site has fueled speculation about underground activity, though no evidence supports these claims.

At least 17 earthquakes were recorded near Area 51 in the United States within a span of 24 hours, drawing attention from scientists and sparking widespread discussion online. According to the United States Geological Survey, the tremors ranged in magnitude from 2.5 to 4.4, with one of the strongest quakes occurring at a shallow depth of about 2.5 miles.

The cluster of seismic activity, often referred to as an “earthquake swarm,” is not uncommon in tectonically active regions. However, reports claimed that the relatively shallow depth of some of these quakes is unusual for the area, where earthquakes typically occur deeper within the Earth’s crust.

The location of the earthquakes has also drawn attention because Area 51 lies close to the Nevada Test Site, where the United States conducted nuclear weapons testing between 1951 and 1992. This historical context has led to speculation in some quarters about the possibility of underground testing, although there is no official evidence to support such claims.

The incident quickly gained traction on social media platforms, where users shared theories ranging from renewed underground experiments to references to long-standing extraterrestrial claims associated with the area. Interest in such theories dates back decades, particularly after claims made by Robert Lazar in 1989 about alleged secret projects involving alien technology.

"AREA 51 JUST LIT UP. 17 earthquakes in less than 24 hours. Right after talk of UFO file releases. Natural activity…or activity underground? Something doesn’t add up," commented one X user.

Another said, "17 Earthquakes in 24 Hours centred around Area 51 probably aren’t all natural coincidences."

A third said, "Are these tremors ordinary? Or were some things tested after Trump's UFO statements?"

Another wrote, "To start with, there's already something odd about there being two seismic swarms relatively close to each other... but hey, it falls within the "possible"... The really strange thing is when we look at the data for those earthquakes and I remember that there have been 32 just in the Area 51 zone."

About Area 51

Area 51 is a highly classified military zone in southern Nevada that has long been the subject of intense speculation. The region is home to military installations, national laboratories and research facilities that operate under strict secrecy, with limited public access. Over the years, it has also been linked to theories about alien spacecraft and extraterrestrial activity, adding to its enduring aura of mystery.
