Udupi: The Udupi centre of the Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ) will be inaugurated on April 28 at 11 am at Shamili Auditorium, Ambalapadi, near NH-66.

The centre is being set up under the sponsorship of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), which functions under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will inaugurate the IIGJ centre, which aims to support India’s ambitions in the jewellery sector.

The centre is expected to use modern technology to train and empower the next generation of designers and skilled artisans. It will also engage with alumni and candidates trained under the PM Vishwakarma scheme, reflecting the government’s focus on skill development and empowerment.

The inauguration of the IIGJ centre in Udupi is seen as a step towards strengthening India’s skill ecosystem in the gems and jewellery sector, especially at the grassroots level.

GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali said that by nurturing talent and promoting value addition, the initiative will enhance the global competitiveness of the industry and support its long-term growth goals.
