Parents in Delhi are growing increasingly concerned due to the continuously rising temperatures and prevailing heatwave conditions. In several areas, temperatures have already soared to between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius. Consequently, the administration has issued a set of guidelines for schools to address the current situation.
The impact of intense heat has been palpable across Delhi and its surrounding regions for the past several days. The Meteorological Department has issued heatwave warnings for various areas. With scorching midday sun and hot winds, concerns regarding the potential adverse effects on children’s health have intensified. As a result, parents and school managements are currently engaged in serious discussions regarding the scheduling of summer vacations.
When Might Summer Vacations Begin?
Typically, summer vacations in Delhi schools commence during the second or third week of May. However, given the escalating heat this year, there are growing demands to start the holidays earlier than usual. Should the temperatures remain consistently high, the administration may decide to revise the vacation dates. As of now, however, no official dates for the revised vacation schedule have been announced.
Changes Made to School Timings
In light of the heat, school timings have been altered in certain districts and various parts of the National Capital Region (NCR). Directives have been issued to open schools earlier in the morning and to conclude classes before the afternoon sets in. This measure aims to protect children from the harsh sunlight and intense heat. Additionally, many schools have independently adjusted their schedules at their own level.
Essential Directives Issued to Schools
The Education Department has issued several guidelines to schools regarding safety measures against the heat. Schools have been instructed to ensure the availability of cool drinking water within their premises, provide first-aid facilities, and implement measures to shield children from direct sunlight. Furthermore, schools have been advised to limit outdoor sports activities and to refrain from sending children out into open grounds during the afternoon hours.
Due to the rising heat, parents remain deeply concerned about their children’s health. Many parents have expressed that attending school amidst such intense heat is becoming increasingly difficult, particularly for younger children. Consequently, demands for an early declaration of summer vacations are gaining momentum across social media platforms and at the local community level. Some parents have also suggested the option of online classes. According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures are likely to remain high in the coming days as well. People have been advised to minimize stepping out of their homes between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Advisories have also been issued to drink adequate water, wear light clothing, and protect oneself from the sun.
