Rajya Sabha chairperson CP Radhakrishnan on Monday accepted the merger of the Aam Aadmi Party’s legislature party in the Upper House of Parliament with that of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
This came three days after, on Friday, seven of AAP’s ten MPs in the Rajya Sabha spilt from the party and announced that they were joining the BJP’s legislature unit.
The seven members, including AAP’s former deputy leader Raghav Chadha, will be considered part of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha.
With this, the Hindutva party now has 113 MPs in the 245-member House. The AAP has three MPs each in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.
A party or a coalition needs the support of 123 members to command a majority in the Upper House.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance now has at least 136 members in the Rajya Sabha.
The BJP’s tally of 113 includes five nominated MPs who have joined the party. There are seven other MPs nominated by the president who do not belong to the BJP.
On Sunday, Sanjay Singh, AAP’s leader in the Rajya Sabha, said that he has submitted a petition to Radhakrishnan seeking the disqualification of the seven MPs who had joined the BJP's legislature party.
Singh said that the decision by the seven MPs amounted to defection and violated the anti-defection law.
