Udupi: As Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshapes the global technology landscape, students appearing for the Common Entrance Test (CET) are increasingly concerned about which engineering course to choose and which combinations will offer better job prospects over the next decade.
With the CET scheduled for April 23–24 and results expected shortly thereafter, students and parents are evaluating courses based on rank, employment potential and emerging technology trends. While traditional streams such as Civil and Mechanical Engineering continue steadily, several new-age specialisations are witnessing significant growth.
Trending engineering streamsWithin Computer Science, combinations such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, Data Science and Big Data Analytics, Cyber Security, Robotics and Automation, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), Renewable Energy, VLSI and Semiconductor Technology, and Biotechnology are currently in demand.
Major-minor system opens new pathwaysUnder the National Education Policy framework, students can opt for a major and a minor specialisation. For example, a student may choose Computer Science as a major with Cyber Security as a minor, or Electrical Engineering with Renewable Energy as a minor. This flexible structure allows broader skill development.
Popular course combinations- Computer Science with AI or Machine Learning: High demand due to data analytics, automation systems and expansion of the IT sector.
- Data Science and Big Data Analytics: Strong employment potential in banking, e-commerce and start-ups.
- Cyber Security and Blockchain: Increased relevance amid rising digital transactions.
- Electronics with AI: Opportunities in semiconductor and chip design sectors.
- Mechanical with Robotics or Electric Vehicles (EVs): Growing demand in automation and EV manufacturing.
- Civil with Environmental Engineering and Smart City technologies: Linked to infrastructure and urban development projects.
- Electrical with Renewable Energy and Power Systems: Considered crucial for future energy needs.
Students securing higher CET ranks often opt for Computer Science with AI, Machine Learning or Data Science. Those with mid-range ranks may consider Information Science with Cyber Security or Electronics and Communication with AI.
Students interested in coding, programming and application development are advised to consider Computer Science, Information Science, AI or Data Science streams. Those inclined towards electronics and embedded systems may opt for Electronics and Communication with AI. Mechanical Engineering combined with Robotics or EV technology is suitable for students interested in practical and machine-based technologies.
Seat availability through CETThrough CET, students can secure seats in engineering colleges affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, including 46 autonomous colleges and several colleges under regional centres in Bengaluru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Mysuru. In addition, private and deemed universities offer varied course combinations.
Expert adviceExperts note that not all engineering colleges offer every specialisation or combination. Students and parents are advised to verify course availability, teaching quality and training facilities before admission. Developing coding skills, gaining practical exposure through internships and projects, and acquiring interdisciplinary knowledge are considered essential for future career growth.
While Computer Science-related courses continue to attract high demand and intense competition, emerging combinations in core streams such as Mechanical and Civil Engineering are also creating new employment opportunities, according to engineering faculty members.
