Shreyas Iyer to Be Team India T20I Captain? Here's Why Suryakumar Yadav's Time Could Be Up
MENSXP | April 20, 2026 2:41 PM CST

Roughly six weeks ago, Suryakumar Yadav led India to a historic 3rd T20 World Cup title. But now there is chatter that Shreyas Iyer could replace him as T20I skipper. As per a TOI report, there is chatter doing the rounds that if the selectors do look for a replacement, Shreyas is the obvious choice.

Why Could Shreyas Iyer Replace Suryakumar Yadav?

Why would Suryakumar be replaced? The reason is his dip in form with the bat which has also resulted in him doing badly in IPL 2026 while Shreyas is not only leading PBKS well but contributing with the bat too. Shreyas won the IPL as KKR skipper in 2024. In 2025, he took PBKS to the final and also made it to the final as DC skipper in 2020.

When Will Shreyas Iyer Take Charge?

While Suryakumar is still the first choice for coach Gautam Gambhir, it remains to be seen if he will be kept at the helm till the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia the same year. Suryakumar’s form had dipped in 2025 and while he revived it in early 2026, he failed to do much in the T20 World Cup that India won as a batter.

“Iyer last played a T20I in 2023. He has not been part of the current setup. It's a big call to bring him back and hand him the captaincy straightaway. The focus has shifted towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, which has given selectors breathing space to plan for a T20I leadership transition,” a BCCI source told TOI.

"Obviously Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based," a BCCI source told PTI.

Not a Good Time to Be Suryakumar Yadav

The T20Is in Ireland and England could be do-or-die for Suryakumar. At the moment, MI are at the bottom of the table with Suryakumar out of form while Shreyas’ PBKS are leading the pack with the skipper showing them how to do it.
