Primark introduced a new £13 rule across its UK stores early this month. The change, which has been in effect since April 1, has led tens of thousands of employees to see their hourly rates increase. Primark employees across England, Scotland and Wales would have seen their hourly rate increase to £13, with those in London now earning £13.71.

The retailer noted the importance of recognising its staff members' hard work, with it revealing that over 27,000 employees are benefiting from the increase. In addition, workers also continue to benefit from various perks, including a 15% year-round discount.

Kari Rodgers, UK retail director at Primark, said: "As retail becomes a more demanding environment, our colleagues play an increasingly important role to support our customers and the local communities we're part of up and down the country.

"By investing in increasing colleague pay, we hope this goes some way towards recognising their hard work, commitment and the value they bring every day."

Many retailers in the UK, including Primark, have raised pay this month.

Aldi store assistants have seen their hourly rate rise to £13.50, with those working within the M25 earning £14.88. Pay rates increase to £14.47 and £15.20 respectively based on length of service.

According to the budget supermarket, the change would have benefited 28,000 hourly-paid workers, and is the second pay rise for Aldi staff members this year.

The boost also strengthened Aldi's position as the highest-paying supermarket, surpassing all its competitors.

The changes introduced by both retailers from April 1 also coincided with the National Living Wage increase. The rate for those aged 21 and over is now £12.71, while for those aged 18 - 20, it is £10.85 per hour.

Apprentices and under-18s get a minimum of £8 per hour.
