This causes stool to stay in the colon longer, drying out and making it more difficult to expel. This leads to problems like constipation, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures.

Doctors also call this the straining paradox. This means that even though you're not intentionally straining, prolonged sitting creates a constant, mild pressure on the pelvic floor. This can cause a tear in the delicate lining of the anal canal, called a fissure, which is quite painful. The easiest way to avoid this is to follow the 5-minute rule. According to Dr. Kadam, if you can't finish within 5 minutes, you should get up and try again later. It's not advisable to use the restroom like a library or office.
