Salman Khan and Sangeeta Bijlani met on the sets of a TV commercial during their early years in Bollywood, and they dated for nearly a decade. Their relationship eventually moved towards marriage, with wedding dates reportedly fixed and invitations even printed. However, the wedding was later called off. Over the years, both Salman and Sangeeta have largely stayed silent about what led to their split. Now, former actress Somy Alihas opened up about that phase, sharing her side of the story and reflecting on her role in the breakup.

Somy Ali on the turning point between Salman and Sangeeta's relationship

In a recent podcast with Vickey Lalwani, Salman Khan's ex-girlfriend Somy Ali revisited the moment that, according to her, changed everything. She revealed that the situation unfolded at her home, where she and Salman were having breakfast when Sangeeta arrived unexpectedly.

Somy said that Sangeeta confronted Salman and asked him to make a choice between the two women. However, Salman did not give a clear answer at that moment. Following this, Sangeeta decided to walk away from the relationship, effectively ending their plans to get married.

‘I was responsible, but not alone’
Speaking about her role in the situation, Somy admitted that she was part of what happened but stressed that the responsibility did not lie with her alone. She shared, "I was only 16 years old at the time and lacked the maturity to grasp the consequences of her actions. I was responsible for the breakup, but Salman Khan was equally guilty. Don't blame the woman alone for the breakup. A man, too, has a hand in it."

Looking back now, she acknowledged that her involvement contributed to the breakup. However, she also questioned the common tendency to blame only women in such situations. In her view, both individuals in a relationship share equal responsibility, and it is unfair to place the burden on one person alone. She also pointed out the age difference at the time, suggesting that while she lacked maturity, Salman was 27 years old and should have been more aware of the situation.

A different perspective with time

Somy further explained that she did not feel guilty back then because she did not fully grasp what she was doing. But with time and experience, her perspective has changed. Today, she admits that she was interfering in a serious relationship that was close to turning into a marriage.

“I didn’t even understand what I was doing at that time. Just imagine how many girls are crazy about Salman Khan… and how many would actually come all the way from America to India just to be with him?, she added. She also hinted that things might have unfolded differently if Salman had made a clear choice. According to her, she would have stepped away and possibly returned to the US if the relationship had not progressed.

For the unversed, Somy Ali, who dated Salman Khan in the 1990s, says being identified as his ex-girlfriend is the biggest drawback in her life. In an interaction with IANS in 2024, she spoke about her time in Bollywood, her relationship with Salman, her NGO No More Tears, and other experiences. She was also asked whether that relationship brought her any recognition, as she is still often known by that association.

Life moved on for everyone

After the breakup, Sangeeta Bijlani moved on and married cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin in 1996. Salman Khan, meanwhile, continued his journey in Bollywood and remains one of the industry’s biggest stars.

On the work front, Salman is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, scheduled to hit theatres on April 17, 2026. He has also announced a new project with director Vamshi Paidipally.
