West Bengal SIR: The process of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list has been completed before the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. After this process, names of a large number of voters in the state have been removed from the list. According to media reports, the campaign ended at midnight on Monday after the judicial inquiry process. According to the estimates of the Election Commission of India, so far the names of about 91 lakh voters have been removed from the list. However, in some cases, a slight change in the final number is possible due to the pending e-signature process.

According to data from the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, most of the more than 60 lakh cases sent for judicial scrutiny have been disposed of. In more than 27 lakh cases, voters were deemed “removable” and their names were removed from the rolls. In this way the total number of removed names has reached approximately 90.83 lakh.

If we look at the previous figures, before the amendment process started, the total number of voters in the state was around 7.66 crore. About 58 lakh names were removed in the draft list released in December, which increased to more than 63 lakh in February. Now after the last phase, this figure has crossed 90 lakhs.

The process of e-signature is still pending in about 22 thousand cases, after which the total number may increase slightly. Those whose names have been removed will be given a chance to appeal in 19 appellate tribunals. Talking about districts, maximum names have been removed from Murshidabad, where the number is more than 4.55 lakh. This is followed by North 24 Parganas and Malda districts, from where also a large number of names have been removed from the list.

Assembly elections are to be held in West Bengal in two phases on 23 and 29 April. Elections will be held on 152 seats in the first phase and 142 seats in the second phase. The results of the elections will be declared on May 4. Overall, this amendment process has been done with the aim of updating the voter list before the elections, the impact of which can be clearly seen in the upcoming elections.
