DA Hike Announcement: This increase will be deemed effective from January 1, 2026; therefore, employees will also receive arrears for the preceding months (January through March).
DA Hike Announcement: There is good news for Central Government employees and pensioners. The government is likely to announce an increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) within the next one or two weeks. Since this hike will be considered effective from January 1, 2026, employees will also be entitled to arrears for the previous months (January to March). This means that a significantly larger salary amount will be credited to their bank accounts this month.
If the government indeed announces the DA hike soon, it will come as a relief to the lakhs of employees and pensioners who have been awaiting this development for a long time. According to media reports, the government may increase the DA by approximately 3 percent this time around. Since the current DA rate stands at 58 percent, this latest hike will push it up to 61 percent. Prior to this, in October 2025, the DA was raised from 55 percent to 58 percent, effective from July 1, 2025.
How Much Will the Salary Increase?
The calculation of the Dearness Allowance (DA) is always based on an employee’s basic salary. For instance, if an employee’s basic salary is ₹56,100, they currently receive ₹32,538 based on the existing DA rate of 58 percent. However, once the DA rate rises to 61 percent, this amount will increase to ₹34,221.
This translates to a monthly salary increment of approximately ₹1,683. Furthermore, the arrears accumulated over the three-month period from January to March will also be added to this amount. Consequently, employees could receive an additional payout of approximately ₹6,732 along with their April salary. However, this specific amount will vary for each employee, depending on their individual basic salary. It is worth noting that with the hike in DA, the TA (Transport Allowance) will also increase, and the gratuity amount received upon retirement will rise as well.
Who stands to benefit?
This increase in DA will benefit approximately 4.9 million central government employees and around 6.8 million pensioners. Amidst rising inflation, this relief is considered crucial for them.
Dearness Allowance (DA) constitutes a component of government employees’ salaries, provided to mitigate the impact of inflation. Its objective is to preserve the employees’ purchasing power, enabling them to manage their expenses despite rising prices.
Eyes on the 8th Pay Commission
The government is also continuing with the process for the 8th Pay Commission. Although it was originally scheduled to be implemented on January 1, 2026, it is now expected to come into effect by mid-2027. For the time being, the hike in DA serves as the most significant relief for employees.
