Whatsapp has banned more than 84 lakh Indian accounts in view of the increasing cases of fraud and misuse. Whatsapp's parent company META has taken this big step.
Why did this action take?
According to a transparency report of META, 8.45 million (over 84 lakh) accounts were banned between August 1 and August 31. This action was taken under the provisions of Section 4 (1) (D) and Section 3A (7) of the Information Technology Act.
WhatsApp said that the decision has been taken to prevent fraud and wrong activities and protect users.
Which accounts were banned?
1.66 million accounts were immediately blocked, as they were violating the rules.
The rest of the accounts were first tested and banned for being involved in suspicious activities.
1.6 million accounts were banned in a proactive manner, as they had misused the platform earlier.

WhatsApp received complaints from 10,707 users.
Of these, 93% of these complaints were taken immediate action.
