Bank of Dave: The Loan Ranger is available on Netflix and the film narrates the real-life tale of entrepreneur Dave Fishwick who established his own community bank with the tagline "Bank on Dave". Dave, the proprietor of David Fishwick Minibus Sales, embarked on this transformative project when he noticed that high street banks were not providing loans to his customers post-recession.
The actual Dave Fishwick, a 53 year old from Lancashire, launched the bank in 2011. However, it's officially named Burnley Savings and Loans, not Bank of Dave.
Despite not being a formally registered UK bank, it remains open and flourishing today.
Given this, there's a limit to how much his customers can deposit. The independent lending firm caught the public eye in 2012 after Dave advocated for Parliament to overhaul the banking system.
He first sought official banking status in 2017 to expand the range of products and services he could offer. Since its inception, the venture has provided loans to thousands of customers, reports .
By 2022, it had granted loans amounting to over £27 million and had expanded from a mere three employees to a large, thriving team.
The company provides assistance with various services, including vehicle finance, business loans, mortgages, and credit cards.
Dave continues to manage his minibus company, meaning he's been incredibly busy balancing both endeavours.
His website proclaims: "The company (BASL) continues to make decisions based on experience and good, old fashioned common sense, making a difference to small businesses and real people, helping a large number of different charities and good causes along the way."
