If this feature is on in your WhatsApp, then whatever you receive on WhatsApp will start getting saved in your phone's gallery, if this happens then the phone's storage will start filling up and the phone will slow down.

You can turn off this feature for individual and group chats. Open the individual chat and then tap on the three dots and go to View Contact, here you will see the Media Visibility option. You can turn off this feature from here, you can follow the same process for group chats as well.
