Chelsea’s Sudden Change of Plans Over Manchester United Target Cole Palmer

Manchester United are entering the upcoming summer transfer window in a strong financial position after securing a spot in next season’s Champions League.

INEOS invested around £200 million last summer even without the lure of European football, and this year they could be ready to spend even more to strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad.

The changing fortunes of their rivals could also serve to benefit United’s rebuilding process.

Chelsea open to selling Cole Palmer

Chelsea endured a disappointing Premier League campaign, finishing 10th and missing out on any European competition. The club now faces financial pressure and may have to offload key players, particularly if they intend to back Xabi Alonso’s recruitment plans at Stamford Bridge.

According to reports from The Sun, only Moises Caicedo is seen as “untouchable” within the current Chelsea squad, leaving Cole Palmer’s future uncertain.

It is understood that an offer starting at £80 million would be required to initiate talks for the talented number 10.

Palmer, who hails from Wythenshawe and grew up as a Manchester United supporter, has been repeatedly linked with a move back to his boyhood city.

Earlier this month, The Daily Mail reported that “there remain sources outside of Chelsea who continue to claim he would consider such a move privately.”

Despite the speculation, United’s current focus appears to be elsewhere, with the club prioritising a contract renewal for captain Bruno Fernandes rather than moving for the 24-year-old Chelsea star at this stage.

Chelsea eye Kobbie Mainoo

Meanwhile, Chelsea have once again turned their attention toward United’s young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. The London club attempted to sign him last summer when he struggled for minutes under Ruben Amorim, but the academy product had no intention of leaving Old Trafford permanently.

Xabi Alonso is reportedly keen to test Mainoo’s resolve again. However, with the midfielder flourishing under Carrick’s management, any renewed pursuit by Chelsea is likely to be futile and a waste of time.
