WhatsApp has introduced the famous, bouncing “three dots” indicator that will appear to users when someone is typing on the other end of the chat. The new “typing indicator” has been rolled out globally for both Android and iOS users.
The messaging giant said in a statement on Thursday, December 5, “Now, when someone starts typing in a group or 1:1 chat, you’ll see a visual ‘…’ indicator at the bottom of the chat screen, along with their profile picture, making it easier to see who is actively engaged in the chat.”
Aimed at increasing real-time engagement among WhatsApp users, the three dot indicator will appear in group as well as personal chats on the platform. It seems to be enabled by default for all users, though it is unclear if the indicator can be turned off. The typing bubble indicator has been a hallmark of Apple's iMessage for years. While some love it, others find such indicators annoying as they don't want their typing status revealed in every chat.
India is the largest market for WhatsApp with over 500 million monthly active users (MAUs). The company has maintained its position as one of the most popular apps in the country by constantly adding new capabilities for users to make the platform versatile and feature-rich.
Recently, reports suggested that WhatsApp was testing a new way that lets users scan QR codes to view and join channels on the platform. The Meta-owned platform last month announced a 'draft indicator' designed to help users easily find and complete their unfinished messages.
