WhatsApp has introduced the famous, bouncing “three dots” indicator that will appear to users as someone types on the other end of the chat. The new “Typing Indicator” has been rolled out globally for both Android and iOS users.
“Now, when someone starts typing in a group or 1:1 chat, you'll see a visual '…' indicator at the bottom of the chat screen,” the messaging giant said in a statement on Thursday, December 5. Their profile picture will also be visible, making it easier to see who is actively participating in the chat.”
Aimed at enhancing real-time engagement among WhatsApp users, the three dot indicators will appear in group as well as personal chats on the platform. It appears to be enabled by default for all users, although it is unclear whether the indicator can be turned off. The typing bubble indicator has been a hallmark of Apple's iMessage for years. While some like it, others find such indicators irritating as they do not want their typing status to be revealed in every chat.
India is the largest market for WhatsApp with over 500 million monthly active users (MAU). The company has maintained its position as one of the most popular apps in the country by constantly adding new capabilities for users to make the platform versatile and feature-rich.
Recently, reports suggested that WhatsApp was testing a new way that lets users scan QR codes to view and join channels on the platform. The Meta-owned platform last month announced a 'draft indicator' designed to help users easily find and complete their unfinished messages.
