WhatsApp is gradually emulating, to some extent, Instagram, and a forthcoming feature is expected to confirm our views. The messaging functionality would enable users to include mentions of others in their status updates. The update will be treated as private, accessible only to the uploader and the specified persons. The anticipated operation of the feature is to perform in a manner like to Instagram Stories, wherein the specified user gets notified. Furthermore, there are indications indicating that the speech mode capability of Meta AI is also under development for the messaging platform.

According to a report by the WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the functionality was detected in the WhatsApp beta application for the Android 2.24.20.3 update. Participants enrolled in the Google Beta Program will not have the opportunity to evaluate the feature at this time. A screenshot from the feature tracker indicates that the new option alone impacts the process of updating the status.

At now, the functionality does not enable users to tag others. Nevertheless, it is noted that this update would enable users to annotate their stored contacts. The function in question is denoted as “mentions” in the screenshot.

The mention icon, visually represented by a ‘@’ symbol, is located inside the text field before the submit button. Another screenshot elucidates the functionality and also clarifies that the person in question will be notified by the other user that they have been referenced. Furthermore, they are said to be recipients of notice on the same matter. Once recorded, users have the ability to access and re-share the status.

Following an update of a status, the user’s name specified will be shown underneath the name of the status owner. Given the private nature of the feature, only the uploader and the specified person will have access to it. This feature enables users to covertly add someone in their status updates without revealing this information to others.

In addition, WhatsApp is allegedly in the process of creating a Meta AI voice mode functionality. This proposed feature is anticipated to provide a variety of speech choices and enable bidirectional voice interaction with artificial intelligence (AI). Certain vocalizations may have British accents, while others may showcase American accents. Furthermore, the article suggests that Meta intends to integrate the perspectives of prominent individuals, but their identities have not been revealed.
